Fire Compartmentation Surveys

Subdividing your building into a number of compartments can restrict the spread of fire and smoke. Floors and ceilings of fire resisting construction can separate a building into areas of manageable risk.

Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, building owners and occupiers are legally obliged to ensure the fire compartmentation in their buildings is robust and being adequately managed. Compartmentation needs to be kept in good repair and working order.

A Fire Compartmentation Survey should be considered if a building has been reconfigured during refurbishment. It can be used to demonstrate any changes have not compromised the fire resistance of an area or show where improvements can be made. A survey can also be useful if you have had any new or replacement services, such as alarms, installed.

A standard Fire Compartmentation Survey covers an inspection of the overall condition of the existing fire compartments, the presence of any damage to fire compartment lines that may reduce effectiveness and other essential areas. To carry out the survey, will need to review drawings, fire strategy documents, inspection records and an in-person visit to the building. We will identify and document the fire-resisting construction and demonstrate any corrective works or actions that need to be taken to preserve the integrity of compartment lines.
